Akbaba 1938 Humor Magazine Turkish Turkey Who Will Devour Whom? WW2 era Philco Spain
Akbaba Humor Magazine – “Who Will Devour Whom?” – Issue No. 223 – April 14, 1938 – Turkish Edition
Description:
Akbaba was one of the longest-running political humor magazines in Turkish press history, founded by Yusuf Ziya Ortaç and Orhan Seyfi Orhon, prominent figures associated with the Beş Hececiler literary movement. Published from 1922 to 1977, with interruptions, the magazine addressed social problems, bureaucratic shortcomings, political rivalries, economic difficulties, and everyday life through caricatures, satirical poetry, and humorous writing. It became an influential platform for Turkish satire, featuring contributions from important literary and artistic figures such as Aziz Nesin, Rıfat Ilgaz, and Turhan Selçuk.
This issue, number 223, is dated April 14, 1938. Its cover features a political caricature depicting figures representing different nations and their leaders attempting to devour one another. Under the headline “Who Will Devour Whom?”, the illustration uses the imagery of a struggle for survival to satirize international rivalries and the competition for power amid rising political tensions in the late 1930s.
The interior pages include a cartoon titled “On the Spanish Stage: As the Final Act of the Tragedy Comes to a Close,” addressing the devastating consequences of the conflict in Spain. Another illustration depicts a peace dove looking over a ruined city and asking, “Where am I, I wonder? In China or in Spain?” Through this striking image, the magazine draws attention to the suffering caused by conflicts in different parts of the world. The issue also features an “Ecnebi Karikatürleri” (“Foreign Cartoons”) section presenting cartoons from abroad, along with a period advertisement for Philco radios. Combining international political satire, anti-war imagery, foreign cartoons, and vintage advertising, this issue offers a glimpse into Turkish humor publishing during the turbulent years preceding the Second World War.
