Akbaba Humor Magazine – “Seasonal Battles: Germany and the Cossack” – Issue No. 425 – April 3, 1942 – Turkish Edition
Description:
Akbaba was one of the longest-running political humor magazines in Turkish press history, founded by Yusuf Ziya Ortaç and Orhan Seyfi Orhon, prominent figures associated with the Beş Hececiler literary movement. Published from 1922 to 1977, with interruptions, the magazine addressed social problems, bureaucratic shortcomings, political rivalries, economic difficulties, and everyday life through caricatures, satirical poetry, and humorous writing. It became an influential platform for Turkish satire, featuring contributions from important literary and artistic figures such as Aziz Nesin, Rıfat Ilgaz, and Turhan Selçuk.
This issue, number 425, is dated April 3, 1942. Its cover, titled “Seasonal Battles,” depicts a German figure marked with a Nazi emblem and holding ski equipment, facing a Cossack figure wearing a papak decorated with Soviet symbols. The accompanying dialogue reads, “Germany: Don’t be fooled by the fact that I gritted my teeth all winter, fellow… You can’t act like a Cossack with me!” The illustration uses winter-sports imagery and the Cossack figure to satirize the military confrontation between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front.
The issue also includes an “Ecnebi Karikatürleri” (“Foreign Cartoons”) section featuring cartoons from abroad. An interior political cartoon, introduced by the note “The Russians want another front to be established in Europe – Newspapers,” depicts Litvinov and Winston Churchill discussing the demand for a second front. Litvinov insists, “Another front in Europe is needed!” Churchill replies, “No… we are not two-faced!” The wordplay turns the debate over the opening of another front into a joke about duplicity and Allied policy during the Second World War.
