Akbaba Humor Magazine – “The Smoke of My Cigar, No Faith in Tomorrow!” – Issue No. 19 – July 13, 1944 – Turkish Edition
Description:
Akbaba was one of the longest-running political humor magazines in Turkish press history, founded by Yusuf Ziya Ortaç and Orhan Seyfi Orhon, prominent figures associated with the Beş Hececiler literary movement. Published from 1922 to 1977, with interruptions, the magazine addressed social problems, bureaucratic shortcomings, political rivalries, economic difficulties, and everyday life through caricatures, satirical poetry, and humorous writing. It became an influential platform for Turkish satire, featuring contributions from important literary and artistic figures such as Aziz Nesin, Rıfat Ilgaz, and Turhan Selçuk.
This issue, number 19, is dated July 13, 1944. Its colourful cover features a caricature of Winston Churchill smoking a pipe, with smoke emerging from a battered German military helmet bearing a swastika. The illustration is accompanied by the poetic caption, “The smoke of my cigar, / Has no faith in tomorrow!” Through this striking visual metaphor, the cover uses Churchill’s smoking image and the damaged German helmet to satirize Nazi Germany’s increasingly difficult wartime position during the final stages of the Second World War.
The issue also includes a feature about Jenny Jugo, the Viennese actress, offering a glimpse into the cinema and entertainment world of the period. Combining wartime political caricature, film-related content, and distinctive visual humour, this issue is an interesting collectible for enthusiasts of Turkish satire, vintage cinema, and Second World War-era publications.
