Akbaba Humor Magazine – “Uncle Sam: Here, Eat This!” – Issue No. 62 – May 31, 1945 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Akbaba was one of the longest-running political humor magazines in Turkish press history, founded by Yusuf Ziya Ortaç and Orhan Seyfi Orhon, prominent figures associated with the Beş Hececiler literary movement. Published from 1922 to 1977, with interruptions, the magazine addressed social problems, bureaucratic shortcomings, political rivalries, economic difficulties, and everyday life through caricatures, satirical poetry, and humorous writing. It became an influential platform for Turkish satire, featuring contributions from important literary and artistic figures such as Aziz Nesin, Rıfat Ilgaz, and Turhan Selçuk.

This issue, number 62, is dated May 31, 1945. Its colourful cover features Uncle Sam crushing a Japanese soldier beneath an atomic bomb. The accompanying caption reads, “Uncle Sam: Go on, eat up! This legacy was left to you by your Axis uncle!” Through this striking political illustration, the magazine uses the imagery of an atomic bomb and a darkly humorous reference to inheritance to comment on the ongoing war against Japan and the changing military balance in the Pacific during the final months of the Second World War.

An interior cartoon depicts the Japanese islands transformed into a cemetery, offering another satirical representation of Japan's wartime situation and the anticipated consequences of the conflict. Together, the cover and interior illustration provide a glimpse into Turkish political caricature and contemporary perceptions of the Pacific War in May 1945.
