Memâlik-i Osmaniyenin Tarih ve Coğrafya Lügatı is an important late Ottoman reference work devoted to the historical and geographical landscape of the Ottoman Empire. Prepared by Ali Cevat, also known as Muallim Ali Cevad or İbn Nüzhet Cevad, the work brings together extensive alphabetical information on the Empire’s cities, towns, villages, mountains, rivers, historical places, notable figures, and administrative divisions. This copy represents the second book of the four-volume series and was published in Istanbul in 1314, corresponding approximately to 1897.

Ali Cevat was born in Üsküdar and educated at the Mekteb-i Harbiye. He spent much of his career as a geography teacher in Ottoman military and civil schools, becoming known as Muallim Ali Cevad. His publications on Ottoman history and geography were closely connected with the development of more systematic geographical education during the late Ottoman period.

In the later years of his life, Ali Cevat was affected by the political upheavals following the proclamation of the Second Constitutional Era in 1908. He was removed from his position and sent into exile, later returning to Istanbul before his death in 1914.

This second volume is particularly notable for its extensive visual content. It contains approximately 20 maps depicting regions including the Arabian Peninsula, Palestine, Syria, the area of present-day Israel, Cyprus, and the Ottoman Empire’s territories in Anatolia and Europe.
