Bringing Up Father – Volume #1 1979 Turkish Comic Turkey George McManus
Güngörmüş Ailesi (Bringing Up Father) – Cilt 1 (Turkish Edition, Taner Yayınları, 1979)
Description:
This is a Turkish-language, black-and-white comic book titled Güngörmüş Ailesi, the Turkish edition of the classic American comic strip Bringing Up Father, originally created by renowned cartoonist George McManus. First published in the United States in 1913, Bringing Up Father became one of the most influential and widely read newspaper comic strips of the 20th century.
The strip centers on Jiggs, an Irish immigrant who unexpectedly becomes wealthy after winning a million dollars in a sweepstakes. While Jiggs longs to maintain his simple, working-class habits, his wife Maggie is determined to climb the social ladder, creating a long-running comedic tension that defines the series. This clash between old-world values and newfound wealth made the strip especially relatable to immigrant audiences worldwide.
This Turkish edition was published in 1979 by Taner Yayınları and released as Volume 1 (Cilt 1). Due to the high cost of color printing in Turkey at the time, the comic was printed entirely in black and white. As was common practice in the Turkish comic industry of the era, the artwork was redrawn by Turkish artists using tracing paper rather than being directly reproduced from the original printing plates.
These localized redraws preserved the original storytelling and layouts while adapting the production process to local economic conditions. As a result, this edition represents an important example of Turkey’s comic publishing history during the late 1970s, when international comic strips were introduced to Turkish readers through reinterpretation rather than direct reproduction.
