Europe Map from “Mükemmel ve Mufassal Coğrafya-yı Umumi Atlası” (1914)
Description:
This is an original Ottoman Turkish map of Europe, dated 1330 AH (1914 AD), taken from the atlas titled Mükemmel ve Mufassal Coğrafya-yı Umumi Atlası, authored by Mehmed Eşref. The atlas was printed in İstanbul by the Artin Asaduryan Matbaası, an Armenian-owned printing house, reflecting the multicultural structure of Ottoman publishing life in the early 20th century.
The map measures 22.6 × 17.4 cm and is fully colored and printed in Ottoman Turkish. It presents a broad geographical view of Europe, including Western and Central Europe, Southern Europe, and parts of Northern Africa. In addition to European states, the map clearly depicts Ottoman territories in both Europe and Asia, offering valuable insight into the empire’s geopolitical perspective on the eve of the First World War.
Produced only months before the outbreak of WWI, this map represents late Ottoman cartographic knowledge and visualizes Europe at a critical historical moment. Its detailed and refined style makes it an important source for historians, cartography collectors, and researchers focusing on Ottoman-era geography.
