Evkaf Treasury Receipt Late Ottoman Script, Republic of Türkiye 1928

Description

This original receipt is dated 23 June 1928 and bears the title “Evkaf Veznesine Teslim Olunan Meblağa Mahsus Makbuzdur.” It records the delivery of a sum of 7 lira and 50 kuruş to the Evkaf Treasury. In Ottoman administrative practice, Evkaf referred to foundations (waqfs) and the institution responsible for managing endowed properties, which held a central place in Ottoman social and economic life.

Although the document belongs to the period of the Republic of Türkiye, it is written in Ottoman Turkish using the Arabic script. This is because the Alphabet Reform, which replaced the Ottoman script with the Latin alphabet, was implemented on 1 November 1928. As such, this receipt represents one of the final examples of official documents produced in Ottoman script.

The document states that the funds were received by the official Sadık Efendi. Its clear administrative language, combined with its late date, highlights the continuity of Ottoman bureaucratic practices into the early Republican era. The receipt stands as a valuable collectible reflecting the transitional phase of Turkish administrative history.
