France Physical Map from Yeni Resimli ve Haritalı Coğrafya-yı Umumi (1913)

Description:

This is an original Ottoman Turkish color map of France, taken from the geography textbook titled Yeni Resimli ve Haritalı Coğrafya-yı Umumi, authored by Safvet Bey. The book was printed in 1332 AH (1913 AD) in İstanbul by Matbaa-i Amire, the official state printing house of the Ottoman Empire.

This work was used as an educational textbook during its period, reflecting the modernization of geography education in the late Ottoman era. The map is printed in Ottoman Turkish using the Arabic script and presented in original color. Its dimensions are 24.1 × 15.8 cm.

The map focuses on France and prominently displays the country’s physical geography. Mountain ranges, elevations, and relief features are clearly illustrated, emphasizing topography rather than political boundaries. This approach reflects contemporary European-influenced cartographic methods adopted by Ottoman educators and publishers.

As a school map produced shortly before the First World War, this piece demonstrates how global geography and physical landforms were taught in Ottoman classrooms. It is a strong example of late Ottoman educational cartography, combining clarity, color, and scientific geographic representation.
