Hantes Mshagouyti – “A Great Loss” – Double Issue #22–23, February 15, 1956 – Armenian-Language Edition

Description:

Hantes Mshagouyti (Cultural Review) was an Armenian-language cultural and arts magazine published in Istanbul by the Getronagan Alumni Association. First issued in 1948, the magazine continued publication intermittently until 1967. It provided a platform for Armenian literature, fine arts, and philology, featuring poetry, short stories, essays, and studies of significant literary and intellectual figures associated with the Armenian cultural world of Istanbul.

This double issue, dated February 15, 1956, is numbered 22–23. It belongs to a period when Armenian cultural publications in Istanbul played an important role in preserving literary traditions, supporting contemporary writers, and documenting the intellectual life of the community. Through its literary and cultural coverage, Hantes Mshagouyti contributed to the continuation of Armenian-language publishing and cultural discussion in the postwar period.

A prominent feature in this issue is titled “Getronagantsineru Medz Koruste” (A Great Loss), announcing the death of Dr. B. Manuelian (1890–1955), a respected figure in the Istanbul Armenian community and the Getronagan educational circle. The obituary commemorates his passing and reflects the magazine’s role in recording the lives and contributions of notable members of its cultural and educational community.

The magazine’s wider editorial tradition includes literary works and studies concerning influential Armenian writers and intellectuals such as Arshag Chobanian, Bedros Duryan, and Hrachia Adjarian. Its combination of literary expression, cultural criticism, and community remembrance makes it an interesting historical publication for researchers and collectors interested in Armenian cultural life in Istanbul during the mid-twentieth century.

For collectors of vintage Armenian periodicals, Istanbul publishing history, and cultural publications from the postwar years, this issue offers a meaningful record of the community’s literary and intellectual life. Its commemoration of Dr. B. Manuelian, together with its place in the magazine’s literary tradition, makes it a noteworthy example of Armenian-language cultural publishing in 1950s Istanbul.
