Karikatür Humor Magazine – New Year 1940 and the World’s Ageing Beard – Issue No. 209 – December 28, 1939 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prestigious Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Continuing until 1948, the magazine published a total of 614 issues and brought together leading cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its artistic illustrations and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, the tensions surrounding Westernization, and international developments, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 209, is dated December 28, 1939, and looks ahead to the arrival of 1940 against the backdrop of growing international uncertainty. The cover depicts an elderly figure representing the world, with a beard made up of bayonets, daggers, and gun barrels. Above the illustration appears the greeting “1940 Mübarek Olsun!” (“Happy New Year 1940!”), followed by the world’s lament: “I've grown a year older. Unfortunately, as the years go by, my beard keeps getting whiter...” The first page features another New Year cartoon, showing a figure wearing a helmet marked “1939” beside the world character lying in bed. Their dialogue, under the heading “Yeni Sene Doğarken” (“As the New Year Is Born”), humorously questions whether the coming year will bring peace, ending with the observation that a child naturally takes after its parent.

The interior pages feature selections from international cartoons, a nostalgic humorous article titled “Tarihten Çizgiler: Eski Yılbaşı Gecesinde!” (“Lines from History: On an Old New Year’s Eve!”), and cartoons commenting on the fashion for women’s conical hats. The issue also presents prediction-themed illustrations under the heading “1940 Senesinde Neler Olacak?” (“What Will Happen in 1940?”), featuring personalities such as Peyami Safa, Lütfi Kırdar, and Hüseyin Cahit. Additional contents include a humorous winter-sports illustration titled “Şimal Sporlarından: Kayak!..” (“Northern Sports: Skiing!..”), courtroom and hunting anecdotes, and period advertisements and announcements for Deutsche Lufthansa, Radyolin, Gripin, Reşat Nuri’s novel Ateş Gecesi, the Model fashion album, and Yedigün publications. Combining New Year satire, international concerns, fashion humor, and contemporary advertising, this issue offers a fascinating glimpse into Turkish popular culture at the end of 1939.
