Karikatür Humor Magazine – “Before India: Militarism” – Issue No. 294 – August 14, 1941 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prestigious Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Continuing until 1948, the magazine published a total of 614 issues and brought together celebrated cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, and international developments, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 294, is dated August 14, 1941. Its cover features a political caricature titled “Before India,” depicting a large elephant carrying a figure representing Britain beneath a covering decorated with the British flag. The elephant holds a monkey labelled “Militarism” with its trunk, while the monkey declares, “Don’t be afraid, I won’t eat you!” The illustration satirically addresses British imperial power in India and the role of militarism in international affairs. The first-page cartoon turns reports of prisoners captured on the Eastern Front into a mock lottery announcement. One character asks whether their number might come up, only to be told that the numbers being read are not lottery results but figures for German prisoners taken by the Russians and Russian prisoners taken by the Germans.

The issue also features a “Harp Portreleri” (“War Portraits”) section presenting illustrated profiles of prominent military and diplomatic figures from Britain, the Soviet Union, the United States, and Free France. These include General Wavell, Marshal Semyon Timoshenko, Anthony Eden, Sir Stafford Cripps, General Wilson, Marshal Kliment Voroshilov, Lord Halifax, General Charles de Gaulle, Lord Gort, Marshal Semyon Budyonny, Vyacheslav Molotov, Cordell Hull, Admiral Cunningham, Maxim Litvinov, and Frank Knox. Other pages feature cartoons about wartime inflation and profiteering, comparisons between the costs of war and everyday economic hardship, a Japan-themed illustration referencing Far Eastern geopolitics, and humorous depictions of urban life and professions expressing affection. The issue also contains period advertisements for Gauthier Vidal paints and Singer watches, offering an additional glimpse into contemporary consumer advertising. Combining political caricature, illustrated portraits, social satire, and vintage advertisements, this issue offers a snapshot of Turkish humor and visual commentary during the Second World War.
