Karikatür Humor Magazine – “New Tricks on the Political Stage” – Issue No. 306 – November 6, 1941 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prestigious Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Continuing until 1948, the magazine published a total of 614 issues and brought together celebrated cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, the tensions surrounding Westernization, and international developments, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 306, is dated November 6, 1941. Its cover features a woman dressed in traditional Japanese clothing, holding a sword and conversing with Uncle Sam. Under the headline “New Tricks on the Political Stage,” America asks, “You’re all dressed up and fully prepared—what is all this preparation for?” Japan replies, “I’m going to play a trick on you!” The illustration uses theatrical language and visual humor to comment on the political tensions and uncertainty surrounding international relations during the Second World War.

The first page features a cartoon about Britain and Soviet Russia waiting for American assistance, with a Russian figure asking, “My friend, you have good eyesight when looking into the distance—see if American aid is coming!” Another illustration looks ironically toward the future of warfare and militarism, depicting a flying warship dropping bombs. Its caption reads, “The peace dove that nations will send flying in 1950!” The issue also includes a piece titled “Nolacak” (“What Will Happen?”), presenting the concerns and questions of contemporary figures from the press and political world about the future. The “World Cartoons” section features humorous illustrations about family relationships, school life, and everyday situations. Combining international political satire with reflections on the future of warfare and familiar social humor, this issue offers a snapshot of Turkish illustrated satire in November 1941.
