Karikatür Humor Magazine – “The Allies on Stage” – Issue No. 333 – May 14, 1942 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prestigious Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Continuing until 1948, the magazine published a total of 614 issues and brought together celebrated cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, the tensions surrounding Westernization, and international developments, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 333, is dated May 14, 1942. Its cover features a political cartoon titled “The Allies on Stage,” depicting three female dancers representing Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States, identifiable by their hats and national symbols. Beneath them, a figure representing War plays a musical instrument and declares, “I’m waiting for the final dance you will perform!” The theatrical scene satirizes the Allied powers’ wartime cooperation and the continuing uncertainty surrounding the outcome of the Second World War.

The issue also includes a cartoon titled “Is Laval’s France Ready to Fight?!”, addressing the political situation in France and the position of Pierre Laval. Another notable illustration, “After the Great Naval Battle,” uses a humorous exchange between a fisherman above the water and a fish below to comment on the aftermath of naval warfare. The fisherman announces that the fish are fresh and have just come out, while the fish responds that they are fresh because they have just gone down. This darkly humorous dialogue turns the consequences of sea battles into a visual joke. Together, the cartoons offer a glimpse into Turkish political satire and wartime commentary in the spring of 1942.
