Karikatür Humor Magazine – “America Comes to Europe to Open a Second Front” – Issue No. 336 – June 4, 1942 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prestigious Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Continuing until 1948, the magazine published a total of 614 issues and brought together prominent cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, and international developments, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 336, is dated June 4, 1942. Its colourful cover features Uncle Sam playing a banjo as he travels toward Europe aboard a warship. Titled “America Comes to Europe to Open a Second Front,” the illustration includes a playful song about the journey, friendship, and following the desires of the heart. The cover reflects contemporary discussions about American involvement in the European theatre of the Second World War and the anticipated opening of a second front against Germany.

The first page features a cartoon titled “The World Looks to the Soviet Hand,” depicting a small figure representing the world extending its hand to a Soviet soldier for a palm reading. The fortune-teller declares, “Your future depends on the strength of our lines!” Using fortune-telling as a visual metaphor, the cartoon satirically portrays the uncertainty surrounding the course of the war and the importance attributed to Soviet military strength. Together, these illustrations offer a glimpse into Turkish political caricature and contemporary perceptions of the Allied war effort in June 1942.
