Karikatür Humor Magazine – “India Is Putting on an Act” – Issue No. 328 – April 9, 1942 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prestigious Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Continuing until 1948, the magazine published a total of 614 issues and brought together celebrated cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, the tensions surrounding Westernization, and international developments, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 328, is dated April 9, 1942. Its cover features a political caricature portraying India as a dancer in a belly-dancing costume, moving to the sound of a horn blown by Winston Churchill standing behind her. Titled “India Is Putting on an Act,” the illustration includes the dialogue: “Briton — O playful beauty of the world, even if I died, I could never give you up!” Through this theatrical imagery, the cartoon satirizes British efforts to maintain control over India during the Second World War, presenting the relationship as a performance in which Britain attempts to keep India under its influence.

The first page features another political cartoon titled “Japan Intends to Hunt Turkeys.” It depicts a turkey representing India perched on a tree branch while a military figure attempts to lure it closer by offering food and calling, “Geh bili bili bili!” The illustration uses the humorous image of a turkey being coaxed from its perch to comment on Japan’s interest in India amid the changing military and political circumstances of the war in Asia. Together, these cartoons reflect the magazine’s use of animal imagery, theatrical metaphors, and visual wordplay to address international affairs and colonial power struggles.
