Karikatür Humor Magazine – “April Fool’s Fish” – Issue No. 379 – April 1, 1943 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prestigious Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Published until 1948, the magazine produced a total of 614 issues and brought together prominent cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, the tensions surrounding Westernization, and international developments, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 379, is dated April 1, 1943. Its colourful cover features Allied leaders dressed as chefs, presenting a giant fish on a platter. The illustration is titled “April Fool’s Fish” and carries the caption, “Head Chefs: Bon appétit to the Axis powers!” Using the traditional April Fools’ Day fish as a visual joke, the cartoon turns the wartime confrontation between the Allies and the Axis powers into a humorous serving scene.

The first page features a cartoon titled “The Fairy of Peace,” depicting the figure of Peace sitting among ruined columns. The accompanying dialogue reads, “All the nations are supposedly working to build my nest; let’s hope that this time the foundations aren’t rotten!” The illustration reflects uncertainty about the prospects for lasting peace amid the destruction of war. Together, the cover and first-page cartoons combine topical political satire with symbolic imagery, offering a glimpse into Turkish wartime humor in the spring of 1943.
