Karikatür Humor Magazine – “Pacific Pickle” – Issue No. 408 – October 21, 1943 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prestigious Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Published until 1948, the magazine produced a total of 614 issues and featured prominent cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, the tensions surrounding Westernization, and international developments, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 408, is dated October 21, 1943. Its colourful cover features Uncle Sam examining a Japanese figure inside a jar, as if preparing pickles. Titled “Pacific Pickle,” the illustration includes the remark, “America: We’ll have to wait a little longer before it’s ready to eat!” The cover uses the familiar image of preserving food to satirize the Pacific War and the ongoing confrontation between the United States and Japan during the Second World War.

The first page features a cartoon titled “Italy Puts on a Sock,” depicting two Allied soldiers struggling to pull a sock resembling the map of Italy onto a foot. Their accompanying remark reads, “Let’s pull this occupation sock on before winter arrives, so the upper part doesn’t get left out in the cold!” Another interior cartoon, titled “Italy Declares War on Germany,” references the famous line “You too, Brutus?” to portray the reversal of Italy’s relationship with its former German ally. Together, these illustrations offer a humorous look at the changing military and political situation in Europe and the Pacific in October 1943.
