Lemi Atlı – Bir Gün Göremezsem Ottoman Turkish 1910s Musical Notes Sheet Empire Circassian
Description:
Bir Gün Göremezsem is a Turkish classical music composition by Hâlid Lemi Atlı, presented here as an Ottoman Turkish printed sheet from the early 20th century. The work is identified as being in the Kürdilihicazkâr makam and was published in Istanbul during the 1920s by Udcu Kudmanizade Şamlı İskender. Hâlid Lemi Atlı was one of the important composers, performers and music teachers of classical Turkish music, particularly renowned for his mastery of the şarkı form, lyrical melodic style and strong voice. He was also known during his lifetime by the nickname “Boğaziçi Bülbülü” (Nightingale of the Bosphorus).
Hâlid Lemi Atlı was born in Üsküdar, Istanbul, in 1869. He was the son of İbrahim Hakkı Bey, who belonged to the Circassian Şîzemû tribe. Following the introduction of the Surname Law, he adopted the surname “Atlı,” the Turkish equivalent of the name of his tribe. His musical career developed within the rich musical environment of Istanbul, where he became known both as a composer and as a respected performer and teacher.
Published by Kudmanizâde Udî Şamlı İskender, the sheet belongs to the important music publishing tradition associated with the Şamlı İskender family. The family had origins in Damascus and became known in Istanbul by the nickname “Şamlı,” which was also incorporated into the name of the publishing business. During the late Ottoman and early Republican periods, when access to sound recordings, radio and other forms of musical reproduction was limited, printed sheet music provided musicians and music enthusiasts with an important means of learning and preserving musical works. The publications of Şamlı İskender therefore form an important part of the printed musical heritage of the period.
This sheet was issued as No. 707 of the Müntehabat series. The Ottoman Turkish script and the Kürdilihicazkâr makam designation preserve important information about the musical identity of the work and provide a direct connection to the printed music culture of Istanbul during the early 20th century. For collectors of Ottoman sheet music, Lemi Atlı compositions, Turkish classical music and Şamlı İskender publications, this is a notable historical example of printed musical notation.
