Mihran Efendi – Rast Taksim Ottoman Turkish 1910s Musical Notes Sheet Empire Armenian Pianist
Description:
Rast Taksim is a Turkish classical music instrumental work associated with Mihran Efendi, an Armenian-origin pianist, kanun player and composer. Mihran Efendi was a versatile musician who played an important role in the transition of traditional Turkish music into new musical and educational settings. He is particularly remembered for his work with the piano and for adapting Turkish music makamı and taksim practices to Western musical notation and piano instruction.
During his musical career, Mihran Efendi was frequently referred to in historical music sources as “Piyano Muallimi Mihran Efendi” or “Piyanist Mihran Efendi.” His activities as a piano teacher helped introduce Turkish makam-based music to students through a Western instrument. At the same time, he was also an accomplished kanun player, instrument maker and composer, demonstrating the diverse musical skills found among Istanbul musicians of the period.
Published by Kudmanizâde Udî Şamlı İskender, the sheet belongs to the important music publishing tradition associated with the Şamlı İskender family. The family had origins in Damascus and became known in Istanbul by the nickname “Şamlı,” which was also incorporated into the name of the publishing business. During the late Ottoman and early Republican periods, when access to sound recordings, radio and other forms of musical reproduction was limited, printed sheet music provided musicians and music enthusiasts with an important means of learning and preserving musical works. The publications of Şamlı İskender therefore form an important part of the printed musical heritage of the period.
This sheet was published in Istanbul during the 1910s as No. 39 of the Müntehabat series. The Rast makam designation and the taksim form reflect the traditional instrumental practice of Turkish classical music, while the Ottoman Turkish script and printed notation preserve a direct record of the musical culture of Istanbul in the early 20th century. For collectors of Ottoman sheet music, Mihran Efendi compositions, historical piano and kanun culture, and Şamlı İskender publications, this is a notable example of early printed Turkish musical material.
