Milliyet Çocuk – Issue #51 – Milliyet Gazetesi Turkish Comic Magazine (1979)

Description:

This magazine is Issue #51 of Milliyet Çocuk, published on December 17, 1979, as part of one of Turkey’s longest-running and most influential children’s periodicals. First launched on October 7, 1972 with the support of Milliyet Gazetesi, the magazine remained in publication until April 1989, playing a significant role in introducing generations of readers to comics, illustrated stories, and popular characters from both local and international sources.

From its earliest issues, Milliyet Çocuk placed a strong emphasis on comic content, featuring a wide range of serialized stories, adaptations, and standalone narratives. Alongside globally recognized titles, the magazine also included more general-interest stories, creating a diverse and accessible reading experience for young audiences.

Starting from June 1977, Milliyet Çocuk began including a complete literary adaptation comic in each issue as a standalone adventure supplement. Over time, more than 150 such supplements each approximately 32 pages, were presented to readers. This literary series is based on Joyas Literarias Juveniles, a legendary collection launched in 1970 by the Spanish publisher Editorial Bruguera, which adapted world literature classics into comic form. Designed to make literature more accessible to younger audiences, the series condensed complex and lengthy works into visually engaging, action-driven narratives. Comparable in concept to the American Classics Illustrated series, it represents one of the most refined examples of Spanish comic artistry, often referred to as the Bruguera School. While originally published in color in Spain, these adaptations were printed in black and white in Turkey due to production cost considerations.

Issue #51 features a cover sourced from Joyas Literarias Juveniles (1970 series) #137, titled “Los mineros de Alaska,” continuing the magazine’s established alignment between cover artwork and the literary adaptation presented within the issue.

Inside, the issue maintains its consistent blend of Turkish and international comic content. “Temel Reis” (Popeye) continues as a recurring classic feature, while “Uzay Çocukları – Kirli Gezegen,” illustrated by Turkish artist Mıstık, adds a locally produced science fiction narrative to the lineup.

“Totoş” (Totoche by Jean Tabary) contributes European humor and character-driven storytelling, maintaining the Franco-Belgian presence within the publication. The literary adaptation featured in this issue is “Alaska Madencileri,” based on Emilio Salgari’s work (I minatori dell’Alaska) and adapted from Joyas Literarias Juveniles #137. This adventure focuses on the hardships and dangers faced by miners in Alaska, emphasizing survival, exploration, and human endurance within a harsh natural environment, presented through a structured comic adaptation.

Additionally, “Larry Yuma – Vadideki Tehlike” (Larry Yuma) continues the western-themed storytelling tradition, adding another action-driven narrative to the issue’s lineup and reinforcing the magazine’s inclusion of popular European western comics.

As part of the mid-December 1979 sequence, this issue reflects the magazine’s ongoing editorial consistency in combining literary adaptations with a variety of comic genres, including humor, science fiction, adventure, and western storytelling.

For collectors, Issue #51 is notable for its Alaska mining adventure adapted from a literary classic, alongside Turkish and European comic contributions, offering a diverse mix of narratives within a single installment of the Milliyet Çocuk series.
