Ottoman Tapu (Title Deed) - Bezm-i Âlem Valide Sultan Vakfı Land in Küçükçekmece, Yedikule, 1896
Description:
An important Ottoman property deed (tapu) dated 26 Kanun-i Sani 1311 AH (7 February 1896 CE), concerning a parcel of vakıf land in Yedikule, Küçükçekmece (Istanbul). The land belonged to the Bezm-i Âlem Valide Sultan Vakfı, founded by Bezm-i Âlem Sultan (consort of Sultan Mahmud II and Valide Sultan to Sultan Abdülmecid I). Vakıf properties were commonly leased or sold under specific terms to private individuals in exchange for yearly payments.
This deed records a transaction in which Agop Efendi veledi (son) Zilinan?, a monk of the Kudüs (Jerusalem) monastery, originally held ownership of a vast estate measuring 684 dönüm 524 zira (as of February 1877). On 7 February 1869, a portion of the land 3 dönüm, 2 evlek, and 355 zira-i atik was sold for 450 kuruş to Oresdes (or Avarsdes) Efendi, represented by Bishop Simon Seferian, a prominent Armenian cleric who later served as Archbishop of Jerusalem.
The deed’s boundaries reference the property of Doctor Horasanciyan, one of the most renowned physicians of his time, especially noted for his treatments of chest diseases. His practice in Pera (Beyoğlu) was widely recognized in 19th-century Istanbul.
This document is also significant for Armenian-Ottoman history, as it mentions key figures of the community:
-
Archbishop Simon Seferian, Armenian Archbishop of Jerusalem, who in 1888 was awarded the Second Class Order of the Medjidie by Sultan Abdülhamid II, a rare honor bestowed upon only about 150 distinguished individuals.
-
Prominent landowners and intellectuals within the Armenian community of the late Ottoman Empire.
Overall, the tapu highlights the intersection of Ottoman vakıf administration, minority communities, and notable personalities of the late 19th century.
