Ottoman Tapu (Deed) - House in Mermerli Mahallesi, Adana (1900)

Description:
This rare Ottoman-era property deed, dated August 1316 (August 1900), documents the ownership of a house located in Mermerli Mahallesi, Adana. The house is described as a multi-level residence with three rooms both upstairs and downstairs, along with one outbuilding. In the boundary section, it is noted that the property is part of a group of houses officially registered under number 135.

The property’s measurements are carefully listed as 100 zira-i atik, 57 arşun-u cedid, 45 kirah, and 64 parmak. The original owners were Roben and Bogos Ağa, sons of Kevork, who had both passed away by the time of this record. Their brother, Kasbar Ağa, an Ottoman subject, inherited a significant portion of the estate. While he initially owned 14 shares out of 104, following his brothers’ deaths he came to hold 42 shares out of 104.

This document is particularly significant as it provides valuable historical insight into the presence and property ownership of the Armenian community in Adana at the turn of the 20th century, reflecting their role in the city’s social and economic life.
