Ottoman En'am-ı Sharif Prayer Book with Havas Sciences, Wafqs & Healing Prayers – Arabic & Ottoman Turkish – c. Early 1900s

Description:

This rare and collectible Ottoman En'am-ı Sharif is an original devotional book believed to have been printed in Istanbul during the early 1900s. Although no exact publication date appears in the volume, its typography, printing style, and contents clearly indicate an early twentieth-century Ottoman edition. Bound in its original hardcover binding and produced in a practical pocket-sized format (9.3 × 7.5 cm), the book was designed to accompany its owner as a daily source of prayer, protection, and spiritual guidance.

Written in Arabic and Ottoman Turkish, this En'am-ı Sharif is far more than a traditional prayer book. It also serves as a handbook of the Ottoman Havas tradition, bringing together selected Qur'anic chapters, prophetic supplications, healing prayers, wafqs (sacred numerical diagrams), and protective talismanic formulas. Such books occupied an important place in everyday Ottoman religious life and were commonly preserved as treasured household companions.

The principal purpose of this work is rooted in the Islamic tradition of Ruqyah—the practice of seeking healing and protection through Qur'anic verses and authentic prayers. It was intended to offer spiritual remedies for the physical illnesses, emotional hardships, natural disasters, and unseen dangers that Muslims might encounter throughout daily life, from birth until death.

The book opens with Surah Al-Fatihah and the opening verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (Alif-Lam-Mim), followed by many of the Qur'an's most frequently recited chapters, including Ya-Sin, Al-Fath, and Ar-Rahman. It concludes with the complete texts of the protective short surahs such as Al-Fil, Quraysh, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, emphasizing spiritual safeguarding and divine protection.

Beyond Qur'anic recitation, the volume contains prayers for everyday religious life, including supplications for breaking the fast during Ramadan, invocations to be recited during thunderstorms and lightning, and repeated formulas of the declaration of faith (Kalimat al-Tawhid) for regular devotional practice. It also features an extensive prayer of repentance (Istighfar), intended to seek forgiveness, spiritual purification, and inner peace.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the book is its collection of traditional healing practices. It preserves Ottoman-era devotional remedies for childhood epilepsy and convulsions attributed to the authorization (ijazah) of Shaykh Abdüllatif Efendi, prayers seeking protection from epidemic diseases such as plague, and a 4×4 Besmele wafq intended to ease difficult childbirth. These texts reflect the historical Ottoman understanding of combining faith, prayer, and sacred symbolism in everyday life.

The visual design also reflects the rich artistic tradition of Ottoman religious publishing. Numerous abjad numerical tables, wafqs, and mystical diagrams are incorporated throughout the text. Among the highlights is the celebrated 7×7 talismanic square associated with the famous Qasidat al-Jaljalutiyyah (Celcelûtiye), traditionally attributed to Imam Ali and widely known in the literature of Havas sciences.

The final pages are beautifully concluded with sacred inscriptions including the Qur'anic verse concerning the Letter of Prophet Solomon and verses praising the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad. Decorative circular panels display the names of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs—Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali—together with Hasan and Husayn, creating a symbolic and devotional conclusion that reflects the artistic elegance of late Ottoman religious books.

Its original Ottoman hardcover binding, compact pocket format, extensive collection of Qur'anic prayers, healing traditions, wafqs, and Havas material make this an outstanding example of early twentieth-century Ottoman devotional printing. Complete examples of this type have become increasingly scarce, making it an excellent acquisition for collectors of Ottoman books, Islamic devotional literature, and historical religious works.
