Ottoman Tapu (Deed) – Farmland in Kilis, Aleppo Province (1908)
Description:
This Ottoman land deed, issued in March 1324 AH (March 1908 CE), documents the ownership of a 12 dönüm farmland in the vicinity of Kilis, Aleppo Province.
The deed records the land’s original owner as İlyas, son of Hana, likely a Syriac (Assyrian) Ottoman citizen, making this document an important testimony to the presence of the Syriac community in the Kilis region during the late Ottoman era. İlyas later sold the property for 2,000 kuruş to İzzet Efendi, son of Muhyi Ağa, another Ottoman citizen.
The deed is preserved with its original Ottoman tax stamps and multiple official seals, enhancing its authenticity and collectible value. It offers valuable insight into minority landownership, agricultural life, and intercommunal transactions in the diverse social fabric of early 20th-century Kilis.
