Description:

Tarih-i İslâm (History of Islam) is an Ottoman Turkish Islamic history textbook by Mahmud Esad, published in Istanbul in 1328 (approximately 1912) by Kitabhane-i İslâm ve Askerî – İbrahim Hilmi. The work was prepared in accordance with the latest curriculum of the Ottoman Ministry of Education, as stated on the title page: “Maarif Nezaretinin en son programına muvafık olarak yazılmış ve bil-cümle mekâtib-i rüştiyeye kabul edilmiştir.” This indicates that the book was officially accepted for use in the rüştiye schools, the Ottoman middle-school level.

The book was designed to introduce young students to the history of Islam and covers the general condition of the Arabian Peninsula before Islam, including the Jahiliyyah period, followed by the life of the Prophet Muhammad (Siyer-i Nebi), the emergence of Islam, the Meccan and Medinan periods, the early military and political achievements of the Muslims, and the period of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs (Hulefâ-yi Râşidîn).

Mahmud Esad (1856–?) was born in Seydişehir, Konya, into the Çopur Kadıoğulları family, a longstanding family of religious scholars and judges. He came to Istanbul and studied the religious sciences at Fatih Madrasah, receiving the title of dersiam in 1881. Alongside his traditional education, he pursued modern sciences at the Menşe-i Muallimîn-i Askerî, studying subjects including mathematics, physics, chemistry and astronomy. He was also proficient in Arabic, Persian, French and English.

Mahmud Esad held important judicial, educational and administrative positions during the late Ottoman period. He served as president of the İzmir Bidayet Court, taught physics and geometry at İzmir İdadisi, and later taught international law at the Mekteb-i Hukuk in Istanbul. He also served as Defter-i Hakanî Nazırı, the Ottoman minister responsible for the administration of land and property registration. His name on the title page together with this ministerial title reflects his prominent position within the late Ottoman state administration.

The book is particularly notable for its visual and cartographic material. It contains numerous illustrations and historical maps, including a map of the Arabian Peninsula, complementing the historical narrative and making the work representative of the illustrated educational books produced for Ottoman schools during this period.
