Rodeo Strip – Suat Gönülay’s “Vakur Barut” – Issue #9, September 2005 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Rodeo Strip was a Turkish comics and entertainment magazine launched in October 2004 by Rodeo Publishing. Described as a magazine of “cinemascope and musical comics,” it aimed to keep comics culture alive in Turkey by bringing together local and international adventure comics, particularly the Italian fumetti tradition, alongside cinema and music features. Its distinctive mix of illustrated storytelling, original Turkish comics, and international material made it a notable publication in Turkey’s comics scene of the 2000s.

This Turkish-language issue, dated September 2005, is the ninth issue of Rodeo Strip and features “Vakur Barut,” a comic adventure by Turkish cartoonist Suat Gönülay, on the cover. The issue also includes “Pests,” written by Odie Bracy and illustrated by Engin Deniz Erbaş, following the mission of an exterminator, and Tanay’s “A Night in the City,” a moody urban story about a detective approaching retirement and confronting his own inner conflicts. Gönülay’s humorous “Mmmarlin” adds a lighter touch, while “Glass Eye,” written and illustrated by Carlo Ambrosini, explores mysterious events unfolding in a surreal world.

The cinema section examines David Cronenberg’s film A History of Violence, while a featured Dylan Dog adventure takes readers into an unsettling apartment building where mysterious incidents disturb the residents and create an atmosphere of suspense and horror. Combining Turkish comic art, international fumetti, detective fiction, supernatural mystery, and film criticism, this issue offers an engaging example of independent Turkish comics publishing in the mid-2000s.
