ROM – Cilt 5 – Turkish Edition, Alfa Yayınları (1985)

Description:

This is ROM Cilt 5, published in Turkey by Alfa Yayınları in 1985 as part of a collected reissue program derived from the original 20-issue weekly ROM series that first appeared in Turkey between late 1984 and 1985. Rather than being a new or separate publication line, the cilt series reused the same material from the weekly issues, repackaging two previously released issues into a single volume under a new cover. This practice was largely driven by commercial considerations, allowing the publisher to reintroduce unsold stock to the market by presenting it as a new compilation. As with the original Turkish run, this volume is printed in Turkish and in black and white, despite the original American series, titled Rom the Space Knight, having been published in full color.

Cilt 5 combines Issue #9 and Issue #10 of the original Turkish weekly series. The cover artwork is taken from ROM #28 (U.S. edition), yet none of the stories from that issue appear inside, continuing the common Turkish publishing practice of selecting visually striking covers without regard for interior story alignment. The first half of the volume, corresponding to Turkish Issue #9, includes the stories Acı Çeken Çocuklar from ROM (1979) #38 (Suffer the Little Children), Ölümden Dönüş from ROM (1979) #39 (Deathrise), Dehşetin Kavalcısı from ROM (1979) #40 (Piper of Peril), Eşikte Yaşayan from ROM (1979) #41 (The Dweller of the Threshold), and the additional short feature titled Cennette Bela Var. The second half, corresponding to Turkish Issue #10, features Vahşet from ROM (1979) #46, Eğlence ve Kabus from ROM (1979) #47, Kaçış from ROM (1979) #48, Yabancılar from ROM (1979) #50 (Extraterrestrials), and the concluding piece Uzay Savaşçılarının Destanı.

Together, these stories represent a broad and varied segment of the ROM narrative, blending darker, horror-influenced episodes with large-scale science fiction conflicts. As a collected volume, Cilt 5 serves as a clear example of how Alfa Yayınları repurposed existing material through new packaging strategies, reflecting both the economic realities and distinctive editorial habits of Turkish comic publishing in the mid-1980s.
