Description:

This original Ottoman Turkish geography textbook, titled Coğrafya Dersleri (Geography Lessons), was written by Safvet Geylangil (1874–1944), an Ottoman-era geographer, educator and author who contributed to the modernization of geography education during the late Ottoman period and the early years of the Turkish Republic. This volume is identified as the First Book and was specifically prepared for the third grade of primary schools (Mekâtib-i İbtidâiyyenin Üçüncü Sınıfına Mahsus). It was prepared according to the 1341–1342 educational curriculum.

Rather than relying primarily on rote memorization, the book reflects a modern educational approach centered on observation, reasoning and logical analysis, expressed through the principles of Mülâhaza, Muhâkeme and Müşâhede. This approach reflects the educational reforms of the period and the changing methods used to teach geography to children through observation and understanding rather than simple memorization.

Safvet Geylangil was educated at the Mekteb-i Mülkiye and taught Economics and General Geography at several prominent educational institutions, including Galatasaray Lisesi, Mülkiye Dâirü'l-Fünûnu, Darü'l-Muallimîn-i Âliye and the Commercial Schools. He later served as Maarif Müfettiş-i Umumisi (General Inspector of Education), reflecting his significant role in the educational administration of the period.

Printed by Matbaa-i Âmire in 1341 (approximately 1925), this edition contains numerous visual materials designed to support geographical instruction. Among these are photographic images of important cities including Istanbul and Izmir, providing young students with visual references to places discussed in the lessons.
