Silver Surfer – Issue #12 – Marvel Çizgi Roman Turkish Edition (1988)

Description:

This comic is Issue #12 from the short-lived Turkish Silver Surfer series published by Marvel Çizgi Roman between 1987 and 1988. The series ran for a total of 14 issues and represents one of the earliest Turkish publications dedicated entirely to Marvel’s cosmic hero, the Silver Surfer.

Unlike the original American editions, which were printed in full color, the Turkish version was produced entirely in black and white. This decision was primarily made to reduce production costs. Instead of printing directly from the original color plates, the artwork was carefully retraced using tracing paper techniques, allowing the publisher to reproduce the iconic illustrations in monochrome form. As a result, these editions have a distinctive visual character that differs noticeably from their American counterparts.

The physical format of the Turkish edition is also slightly smaller than the original U.S. comics, reflecting the printing standards commonly used by Turkish comic publishers during the 1980s. Despite these differences, the series holds a unique place in Turkish comic history, introducing readers to the philosophical and cosmic adventures of the Silver Surfer during a time when Marvel material was still relatively rare in the Turkish market.

The cover of this issue is adapted from The Defenders issue #99, reflecting the issue’s direct connection to the long-running Marvel team series. Inside, the comic features two consecutive stories taken from Defenders Vol. 1 issues #99 and #100.

The first story, presented simply as “Silver Surfer,” comes from Defenders issue #99 and places the character within the context of Marvel’s unconventional superhero team known as the Defenders. Unlike more structured teams such as the Avengers or Fantastic Four, the Defenders were known for their loose alliances and unpredictable group dynamics, which often resulted in unusual storylines and character interactions.

The second story, “Yeryüzü Cehennem,” is adapted from Defenders issue #100 and continues the narrative arc. Issue #100 of The Defenders marked an important milestone for the series, and the storyline reflects the darker and more intense tone often associated with the team’s adventures during this period.

For collectors, this issue is notable for presenting a connected Defenders storyline that integrates the Silver Surfer into the broader Marvel superhero landscape, demonstrating how the character moved beyond his solo cosmic adventures to appear in major team-based narratives.
