Silver Surfer – Issue #2 – Marvel Çizgi Roman Turkish Edition (1987)

Description:

This comic is issue #2 from the short-lived Turkish Silver Surfer series published by Marvel Çizgi Roman between 1987 and 1988. The series ran for a total of 14 issues and represents one of the earliest Turkish publications dedicated entirely to Marvel’s cosmic hero, the Silver Surfer.

Unlike the original American editions, which were printed in full color, the Turkish version was produced entirely in black and white. This decision was primarily made to reduce production costs. Instead of printing directly from the original color plates, the artwork was carefully retraced using tracing paper techniques, allowing the publisher to reproduce the iconic illustrations in monochrome form. As a result, these editions have a distinctive visual character that differs noticeably from their American counterparts.

The physical format of the Turkish edition is also slightly smaller than the original U.S. comics, reflecting the printing standards commonly used by Turkish comic publishers during the 1980s. Despite these differences, the series holds a unique place in Turkish comic history, introducing readers to the philosophical and cosmic adventures of the Silver Surfer during a time when Marvel material was still relatively rare in the Turkish market.

The cover of this issue is based on Fantasy Masterpieces Vol. 2 issue #2, featuring Silver Surfer artwork adapted for the Turkish release. Inside, the issue includes several classic Silver Surfer stories originally published in the late 1960s, including segments from Silver Surfer (1968) issue #2 and issue #3. These stories continue the early adventures of the character, showcasing the cosmic scale and moral themes that made the Silver Surfer one of Marvel’s most unique and introspective heroes.

A particularly interesting addition is the short comic “Gümüş Kıyakçı” by Turkish artist Yıldırım Örer. This piece is a parody interpretation of Silver Surfer created by a local cartoonist, offering a humorous and distinctly Turkish take on the famous Marvel character. Such locally produced parody content was occasionally included in Turkish comic publications of the era, adding a unique cultural layer that makes these editions especially appealing to collectors.

For collectors of international Marvel editions, this Turkish series is notable both for its unusual production method and for the rare combination of official Marvel material alongside locally created parody content.
