Silver Surfer – Issue #7 – Marvel Çizgi Roman Turkish Edition (1988)
Description:
This comic is Issue #7 from the short-lived Turkish Silver Surfer series published by Marvel Çizgi Roman between 1987 and 1988. The series ran for a total of 14 issues and represents one of the earliest Turkish publications dedicated entirely to Marvel’s cosmic hero, the Silver Surfer.
Unlike the original American editions, which were printed in full color, the Turkish version was produced entirely in black and white. This decision was primarily made to reduce production costs. Instead of printing directly from the original color plates, the artwork was carefully retraced using tracing paper techniques, allowing the publisher to reproduce the iconic illustrations in monochrome form. As a result, these editions have a distinctive visual character that differs noticeably from their American counterparts.
The physical format of the Turkish edition is also slightly smaller than the original U.S. comics, reflecting the printing standards commonly used by Turkish comic publishers during the 1980s. Despite these differences, the series holds a unique place in Turkish comic history, introducing readers to the philosophical and cosmic adventures of the Silver Surfer during a time when Marvel material was still relatively rare in the Turkish market.
The cover of this issue is adapted from Fantasy Masterpieces Vol. 2 issue #11, featuring classic Silver Surfer artwork reused for the Turkish release. Inside, the issue presents three stories from the later part of the original 1968 Silver Surfer series, continuing the character’s blend of cosmic scale storytelling and philosophical reflection.
The first story, “Acı Zafer,” originates from Silver Surfer issue #11 and explores the tragic contradictions often surrounding the Surfer’s victories—where triumph may still come with loss, sacrifice, or moral ambiguity. It is followed by “İğrenç Yaratık,” adapted from Silver Surfer issue #12, a story that confronts the Surfer with a disturbing and symbolic adversary, continuing the series’ tradition of blending action with deeper thematic undertones.
The final story, “Kıyamet Günü Adamı,” comes from Silver Surfer issue #13 and presents another cosmic-scale conflict that highlights the character’s role as both a protector and an outsider within the universe he travels. Stories from this period helped cement the Silver Surfer’s reputation as one of Marvel’s most reflective and philosophically driven characters.
As with several issues in this Turkish series, the comic also includes “Gümüş Kıyakçı,” a parody interpretation of the Silver Surfer created by Turkish artist Yıldırım Örer. This humorous local comic offers a satirical take on the iconic Marvel character and reflects a distinctive aspect of Turkish comic publishing during the period, where translated superhero material was sometimes accompanied by original parody works produced by local artists.
