Silver Surfer – Issue #9 – Marvel Çizgi Roman Turkish Edition (1988)
Description:
This comic is Issue #9 from the short-lived Turkish Silver Surfer series published by Marvel Çizgi Roman between 1987 and 1988. The series ran for a total of 14 issues and represents one of the earliest Turkish publications dedicated entirely to Marvel’s cosmic hero, the Silver Surfer.
Unlike the original American editions, which were printed in full color, the Turkish version was produced entirely in black and white. This decision was primarily made to reduce production costs. Instead of printing directly from the original color plates, the artwork was carefully retraced using tracing paper techniques, allowing the publisher to reproduce the iconic illustrations in monochrome form. As a result, these editions have a distinctive visual character that differs noticeably from their American counterparts.
The physical format of the Turkish edition is also slightly smaller than the original U.S. comics, reflecting the printing standards commonly used by Turkish comic publishers during the 1980s. Despite these differences, the series holds a unique place in Turkish comic history, introducing readers to the philosophical and cosmic adventures of the Silver Surfer during a time when Marvel material was still relatively rare in the Turkish market.
The cover of this issue is adapted from Fantasy Masterpieces Vol. 2 issue #13, continuing the practice of repurposing classic Marvel cover artwork for the Turkish release. Inside, the issue presents stories drawn from later entries of the original Silver Surfer series, along with an early and historically important appearance of the character from the Fantastic Four universe.
The first story, “Şeytan’ın Uşağı,” comes from Silver Surfer Vol. 1 issue #17 and continues the character’s cosmic struggles against powerful and often symbolic adversaries. This is followed by “İnsandışılar,” adapted from Silver Surfer Vol. 1 issue #18, a story that further explores the Surfer’s encounters with extraordinary beings and the moral questions often embedded within these confrontations.
The issue also includes a shortened version of the story from Fantastic Four issue #48, presented here as “Silver Surfer part 1.” This famous storyline marks the first appearance of both the Silver Surfer and Galactus in Marvel Comics history. Even in abbreviated form, the inclusion of material from Fantastic Four #48 connects this Turkish edition to one of the most significant and influential cosmic story arcs in the Marvel Universe.
