Silver Surfer – Volume 4 – Alfa Yayınları Turkish Edition (1989)

Description:

This comic is Volume 4 of the Turkish series Gümüş Kayakçı, published by Alfa Yayınları between 1988 and 1989. The series ran for a total of 6 volumes and represents one of the earliest Turkish publications specifically devoted to the Silver Surfer. Each volume compiled stories from the earlier Marvel Çizgi Roman Silver Surfer series, often combining two original issues into a single Turkish volume, and was published every 15 days, making it a collectible periodical for readers at the time.

Unlike the original American editions, which were printed in full color, the Turkish version was produced entirely in black and white. This decision was primarily made to reduce production costs. Instead of printing directly from the original color plates, the artwork was carefully retraced using tracing paper techniques, allowing the publisher to reproduce the iconic illustrations in monochrome form. As a result, these editions have a distinctive visual character that differs noticeably from their American counterparts.

The physical format of the Gümüş Kayakçı volumes is also slightly smaller than the original U.S. comics, reflecting the printing standards commonly used by Turkish comic publishers during the 1980s. Despite these differences, the series holds a unique place in Turkish comic history, introducing readers to the philosophical and cosmic adventures of the Silver Surfer during a time when Marvel material was still relatively rare in Turkey.

The cover of Volume 4 is adapted from Silver Surfer Annual #3. Inside, this volume collects a rich selection of classic Silver Surfer stories, blending solo adventures, cosmic battles, and iconic Marvel crossovers. The included stories are: “Acı Zafer” (Silver Surfer #11), exploring moral dilemmas surrounding victory and loss; “İğrenç Yaratık” (Silver Surfer #12), presenting a symbolic and challenging adversary; “Kıyamet Günü Adamı” (Silver Surfer #13), highlighting large-scale cosmic conflict; “Şeytan’ın Uşağı” (Silver Surfer #17) and “İnsandışılar” (Silver Surfer #18), continuing the Surfer’s encounters with extraordinary beings; and a shortened version of “Silver Surfer part 1” from Fantastic Four #48, featuring the historic first appearance of both Silver Surfer and Galactus.

For collectors, Volume 4 is especially significant due to its inclusion of both pivotal solo Silver Surfer stories and an iconic Marvel crossover, offering a dense and compelling reading experience in the uniquely Turkish black-and-white format.
