Silver Surfer – Volume 6 – Alfa Yayınları Turkish Edition (1989)

Description:

This comic is Volume 6 of the Turkish series Gümüş Kayakçı, published by Alfa Yayınları between 1988 and 1989. The series ran for a total of 6 volumes and represents one of the earliest Turkish publications specifically devoted to the Silver Surfer. Each volume compiled stories from the earlier Marvel Çizgi Roman Silver Surfer series, often combining two original issues into a single Turkish volume, and was published every 15 days, making it a collectible periodical for readers at the time.

Unlike the original American editions, which were printed in full color, the Turkish version was produced entirely in black and white. This decision was primarily made to reduce production costs. Instead of printing directly from the original color plates, the artwork was carefully retraced using tracing paper techniques, allowing the publisher to reproduce the iconic illustrations in monochrome form. As a result, these editions have a distinctive visual character that differs noticeably from their American counterparts.

The physical format of the Gümüş Kayakçı volumes is also slightly smaller than the original U.S. comics, reflecting the printing standards commonly used by Turkish comic publishers during the 1980s. Despite these differences, the series holds a unique place in Turkish comic history, introducing readers to the philosophical and cosmic adventures of the Silver Surfer during a time when Marvel material was still relatively rare in Turkey.

The cover of Volume 6 is adapted from Silver Surfer Vol. 2 issue #3 (1987). Inside, this volume includes several pivotal stories: “Silver Surfer” (Defenders #99) and “Yeryüzü Cehennem” (Defenders #100), placing the Surfer within the context of Marvel’s Defenders team and their cosmic conflicts; “Dehşete Kaçış” (Silver Surfer Vol. 2 #1, 1982 Escape to Terror), a dramatic solo adventure exploring existential and cosmic dangers; and “Eğer Galactus Silver Surfer’ı Norrin Radd’a Döndürseydi” (What If? 1977 #37), an alternate reality tale that examines the consequences of stripping the Surfer of his Power Cosmic and returning him to his original human form, Norrin Radd.

For collectors, Volume 6 is significant as it concludes the Gümüş Kayakçı series, offering a mix of Defenders team stories, classic solo Silver Surfer adventures, and rare alternate reality tales, all presented in the uniquely Turkish black-and-white format.
