Vampirella – Issue #1 – Benli Yayınevi Turkish Edition (1976)

Description:

This comic is Issue #1 from the Turkish Vampirella series published by Benli Yayınevi between 1976 and 1978. The series ran for a total of 31 issues and stands as one of the earliest dedicated Vampirella publications in Turkey, introducing the character to local readers during a formative era of Turkish comic publishing. Initially released on a weekly basis with 34-page numbered issues, the series later transitioned in early 1977 to a monthly format, producing at least 11 unnumbered issues with expanded 66-page content.

Printed entirely in black and white and produced in a smaller comic book format (approximately 24 cm in height), this edition reflects the technical and economic realities of the period while maintaining strong ties to its original source material. Similar to the contemporary Turkish horror publication Korku, the series drew extensively from Warren Publishing’s Creepy and Eerie magazines, offering a mix of horror and science fiction content. Alongside Vampirella stories, readers were occasionally presented with appearances from characters and properties such as Morbius the Living Vampire, Planet of the Apes, and Space: 1999, creating a diverse anthology structure.

Issue #1 is particularly significant as it presents “Ve Benim Adım Vampirella,” the Turkish version of The Origin of Vampirella from Vampirella Annual (1972), establishing the character’s origins and thematic foundation. The issue also includes “Açlık Vadisinde Çocuk Yoktu” and the first part of “Kont Dracula’nın Şatosu” (Castle Dracula), adapted from The House of Hammer No. 1 (1976). This adaptation is based on the 1958 Dracula film starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, adding a strong cinematic horror influence to the issue.

The cover is taken from Vampirella #46 (1975), illustrated by José González, one of the most iconic artists associated with the character. As the first issue of the series, this comic holds particular importance for collectors, combining origin material, classic horror adaptation, and a highly recognizable cover into a key entry within the Benli Yayınevi Vampirella run.
